He was a distinguished pioneer in many lines of business. When the bridge over the Wisconsin River washed out in 1888, Lawrence had a ferry in operation in less than a week. He started a cheese factory in Rudolph and was prominent in the cranberry industry. He was also very involved in early Northwoods logging camps and employed over 200 men. In addition to being a leader of industry, Lawrence was the mayor of both Centralia and Grand Rapids before the two communities combined to become Wisconsin Rapids.
