The Village of North Fond du Lac is located northwest of the City of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. North Fond du Lac offers a small-town living environment with the convenience of larger cities amenities. North Fond du Lac shares a similar history with the City of Fond du Lac. Its origins date back to the 1800s. North Fond du Lac was first settled in 1838 by farmers who settled near Lake Winnebago.
During the Civil War, the village was an important stop on the underground railroad. Many of the homes in North Fond du Lac were used as safe houses to help runaway slaves escape into Canda. A military hospital was established in North Fond du Lac to care for wounded Civil War soldiers.
On July 10, 1851, the construction of the Rock River Valley Union Railroad began as part of The Northwestern system. The railroad offered many employment opportunities to the area. In the early years, Fond du Lac had 46 passenger and 54 freight trains every day. Substantial car shops for the line were operated in North Fond du Lac during the railroad’s historic period per the Wisconsin Historical Society.
Today,North Fond du Lac has a population of over 5300. The area is full of natural beauty, parks, and outdoor recreation, including: baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, hiking trails, tennis courts, as well as all Lake Winnebago has to offer.
